Our Mission
The Miniature Art Society of South Africa (MASSA) is dedicated to promoting and preserving the art of miniature fine art. Our aim is to:
- Encourage artists interested in the pursuit of miniature art.
- Foster appreciation for the delicacy, precision, and intimacy of working in a small scale.
- Promote awareness of miniature art among both artists and the public.
- Support the collection of fine miniature artworks.
- Provide educational opportunities for those eager to learn the techniques of miniaturism.
- Maintain the highest professional standards in keeping with the tradition of miniature fine art.
Our History
The Miniature Art Society of South Africa was founded in 1992 by Charmian Kennealy and Jeff Sochen, who shared a passion for reviving miniature art in South Africa. Inspired by the resurgence of miniature societies worldwide, MASSA was created to provide a platform for artists who appreciate the discipline and detail required for miniatures.
Since its founding, MASSA has grown into a vibrant society with members across South Africa. We have held successful exhibitions in major cities and are affiliated with the World Federation of Miniaturists (WFM), participating in four world exhibitions, where our members’ work has been highly acclaimed. In 2016, we proudly hosted the 6th WFM Exhibition at Hyde Park Corner, where three of our members won Awards of Excellence.
